WHAT DOES THE STATE LAND OFFICE DO?

The New Mexico State Land Office manages 9 million surface and 13 million mineral acres across every county in the state. This state trust land was allocated to New Mexico by the federal government under the Ferguson Act of 1898 and the Enabling Act of 1910. The mission of the NM State Land Office is to use state trust land to raise revenue for public schools, universities, and hospitals as well as other public institutions. Revenue is raised through lease agreements for oil, gas, and mineral exploration, business and commercial operations including renewable energy projects, agriculture and livestock grazing, and outdoor recreation.

Our public lands, and everything they funD, are under attack!

This election could decide whether the State Land Office continues to serve all New Mexicans, or just the few who stand to benefit from unchecked development.

what's at stake

Who does it serve?

Earnings from public land go directly into the Land Grant Permanent Fund, where they are invested to grow even larger. A percentage is then paid out to beneficiaries for education and other public programs. But the benefits go far beyond our schools. Revenue from the Land Office helps fund:

  • Public K-12 schools (supporting over 330,000 students across 89 school districts)
  • State Universities like UNM, NMSU, ENMU, and more
  • Specialized schools for students with disabilities
  • Children’s hospitals and medical centers like Carrie Tingley Hospital and Miners’ Colfax Medical Center
  • Behavioral health services and youth rehabilitation centers
  • Water and irrigation projects, public buildings, and infrastructure
